To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. PEARSON,

a citizen of the United States, resident of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have made a certain new. and useful Invention in Spirit-Message Conveying Devices; and I declare the fol-' lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertai'ns to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention has relation to devices operated or controlled by the hand or finger pressure, whereby messages are conveyed from the spirit world to the operator.

The invention consists in the novel con struction and combinations ofparts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the face of the instrument or board, w hereon is marked or printed a circle 3, around the circumference of which are printed seriatc'm the letters of the alphabet and the digital numbers 1, 2, 3, l, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0. Adjacent to or within this circle are also the words No and Yes opposite difierent portions of the circumference, and the phrases Take notice and Ask questions, also opposite different portions of the circumference.

The board is provided centrally of said circle with an aperture 4:, wherein is rotatably mounted a shaft or stem 5, carrying fast thereto a hand or pointer 6, extended adjacent to the circumference and relating to the markings aforesaid in its rotation.

In an instrument of this character, it is essential that the operating device shall be sensitive to the slightest pressure or impulse, or to a high degree.

The operating device in the present case consists of a key or controlling member 7 provided with a stem 8, working in a trans-' verse slot 9 of the board, said stem at its lower end working in alongitudinal slot 10, at the free end of a lever 11, the latter pivoted at 12 intermediately of its length and provided with a segmental rack 13 at its other end, said rack engaging a pinion or small gear 14 upon the stem 5. The stem 8 may have. an anti-friction roller 5, if desired, and the operating device or key may travel'upon anti-friction shoes or rollers 15.

. In the operation of the board, the person desiring to receive a message places his or her hands upon the sensitive key, and the spirit impulse will cause the said key to move to the right or to the left and to thereby move the pointer into registration with the required letter or number or word or phrase to convey the message. The pointer would of course be directed to letters successively to spell words.

It is important in a device of this character that the key or controlling member shall have a bearing upon the face of the board, this bearing being in the present case the shoes or bosses 15 resting upon the board and carried by said member, as in this way the pressure or strain is taken from the lever 11 and the device is rendered more sensitive. There is also in this way less strain upon the operator who may rest the fingers or hand freely upon the key or control member. Of course irrespective of the use of this instrument to aid or act as a medium in the transmission of spirit messages,

it is useful as an amusement device. It is quite generally acknowledged nowadays however that communications with the spirit world are possible and not infrequent.

In a device of the class described, a support having at one end a field bearing thereon the lettersv of the alphabet, and at its other end provided with a transverse slot, a rotary pointer having a shaft concentric of said field bearing a pinion, an operating board of small size overlying said slot and having centrally thereof a stud projecting through said slot, and a lever having at one end a slot engaged by said stud and at its other end an arcuate rack engaging said pinion, said operating board being adapted for operation by one handof the operator placed thereon over said stud.
