‘Super Mario Bros. Wonder’ Looks Utterly Surreal

Following

In the latest Nintendo Direct we were introduced to a new functionally 2D Super Mario game, and it looks thoroughly bizarre.

Called Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it initially appears to be a standard old-school 2D Super Mario game.

However, the new power ups and setting seem to take a rather mind-bending approach to how a Super Mario game would normally play.

I am entirely fine with this obviously, but I was a bit surprised to see things like the environment change and fight back in such a surreal way.

The game also looks to have cooperative play, which again is becoming more of a staple for the Super Mario series.

While I am all for new 2D games in the Super Mario series, after Bowser’s Revenge and Odyssey I was expecting the Super Mario series to venture into more open world territory.

We haven’t had a full 3D Super Mario release in a while and Bowser’s Revenge felt like a template for a much bigger game on the way.

For now, though, it appears like we will have what looks to be a very imaginative take on the traditional 2D Super Mario formula.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be released for the Switch on October 20.
