The Origins of Winnie the Pooh

The first book about Winnie the Pooh, simply entitled "Winnie-the-Pooh", by Alan Alexander Milne was published on October 14th 1926.

The character of Christopher Robin was inspired by the author's son Christopher Robin Milne, and Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga and Roo by the boy's beloved stuffed toys.

Christopher Robin Milne's teddy bear was first named Edward. He was later renamed Winnie after a female black bear that resided for some time at London Zoo. The bear was named after the Canadian city of Winnipeg.

Movie Appearances

Winnie the Pooh and his friends were first brought to life by Disney animators in 1966 in the theatrical featurette "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree". Two more short films followed: "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day" (1968) and "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too" (1974). All three were combined in 1977 in the full-length movie "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh".

Subsequently, Winnie the Pooh and friends appeared in four television series, nine direct-to-video movies and four theatrical releases ("The Tigger Movie", "Piglet's Big Movie", "Pooh's Heffalump Movie" and "Winnie the Pooh").

About the Main Characters

Winnie the Pooh is a kind and friendly bear of very little brain who lives in the enchanted forest known as the Hundred Acre Wood, in a treehouse under the name Sanders.

He is stout and round and generally slow and sluggish. A typical morning for Pooh begins with stoutness exercise, followed by a smackerel or two of honey, which often leads to his seam ripping.

Piglet is a nervous and timid little pig who lives in the middle of the forest in a "very grand house" in the middle of a beech-tree. Though generally very fearful, he shows great courage in the face of danger to help his friends.

Eeyore is a gloomy and pessimistic donkey stuffed with sawdust who lives alone in a house made of sticks. His friends frequently try to cheer him up, but nothing quite does the trick. If nothing else, he is dependable.

Though Eeyore doesn't think much of his tail, he is rather attached to it, even when it falls off, which it tends to do often.

Tigger is an energetic and optimistic "tigger" (the only one of his kind) who loves to bounce and pounce. He is rather impulsive and prone to mischief, which sometimes leads to trouble for himself and his friends.

His confidence is not lacking, as evidenced in the song "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers", where he boasts in circular fashion that "the wonderful thing about Tiggers is Tiggers are wonderful things"!

Kanga is a stuffed kangaroo who lives with her son Roo in a treehouse, where she spends much of her time keeping house and knitting.

Kanga and Roo are good friends with their neighbours, particularly Tigger. Calm, sweet-tempered Kanga is nurturing to all her loved ones. Roo, the youngest of the Hundred Acre Wood gang, is playful and full of energy.

Rabbit lives in a large tree with a hearty vegetable garden. Controlling and rather nitpicky, Rabbit prefers to do things his own way, and enjoys many solo activities and hobbies, like working in his garden, reading and cleaning.

Though a little impatient with his friends, he has a good, honest heart, and often joins them on their adventures.

Owl lives in a house at the top of a tall tree. He tends to speak knowledgeably and long-windedly on a wide variety of subjects, his large, colorful family being a particular favorite.

Though seen by most of his friends as wise and intelligent, his guidance and advice is often questionable.
