When To Visit Punta Cana

One of the most frequently asked questions for visitors to Punta Cana is simple: when’s the best time to go?! The short answer to that question is also simple, especially for North Americans and Europeans; when it’s cold outside you’re better off in the Caribbean than at home! With that said, there’s several aspects of the Dominican Republic’s weather and climate that are important to understand before booking that long awaited Punta Cana vacation.

Punta Cana Weather

The High Season: December to April

For those looking to escape chilly winters, the period between December and April is often considered the best time to visit Punta Cana. This period marks the high tourist season when the weather is consistently warm and dry, making it ideal time to visit. Temperatures range from 80°F to 85°F during Dominican winters. During Dominican summers the temperature does not change much, averaging from 85°F to 90°F. The big difference is the humidity! Whereas summertime humidity is consistently above 80% (hot and sticky), wintertime humidity is consistently sub 70% (dryer and more comfortable). During this time, you’ll also see less rainfall and a no hurricanes! which are only seen during the Atlantic hurricane season from June to November.

The Shoulder Seasons: May and November

The shoulder seasons, specifically May and November, offer a balance between favorable weather conditions and fewer crowds. While these months may see a slight increase in rainfall, the showers are often short-lived and followed by clear skies. This can be a great time to visit if you’re looking to enjoy Punta Cana’s attractions without the peak-season crowds.

Additionally, prices for accommodations and activities are generally more budget-friendly during these months, making it an attractive option for travelers seeking a more affordable getaway.

The Green Season: June to October

The period from June to October is considered the green season, also known as the “rainy season”, in Punta Cana. While these months experience higher humidity and an “increased” chance of rain, there are still reasons to consider visiting during this time. Punta Cana, in general, has a drier climate than other parts of the Dominican Republic. There really isn’t a distinct rainy season. The eternal forecast, even in the “rainy season”, is warm, partly cloudy with a chance of a short shower. This is the reality some 300 days a year. So much so that locals do not check the weather forecast because it’s always the same! With that said, although there is an increase in rain, the showers are short lived and tropical in their nature coming in short bursts and typically in the afternoon.

In general, the green season offers a quieter atmosphere and fewer tourists. But June, July and early August can get busy as this time coincides with school Summer break, especially in North America. And yes people vacation in the Caribbean, even in the Summer!

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season stretches from June to November but the highest chance to see a hurricane is really September and October. Although major hurricanes are rare in Punta Cana, just the threat of a hurricane can wreak havoc on travel plans. Due to the combination of kids going back to school and the threat of hurricanes, September and October are considered low season in Punta Cana. On the up side, these months will normally feature the best airfare and hotel rates coupled with less tourists to share the beach with!
