Cuando hablamos de hemotórax hacemos referencia a un término médico utilizado dentro del área clínica. La palabra hemotórax indica la presencia de sangre dentro de la cavidad pleural, es decir el espacio que existe entre la pared torácica y el pulmón.
When we speak of hemothorax we refer to a medical term used within the clinical area. The word hemothorax indicates the presence of blood within the pleural cavity, that is, the space between the chest wall and the lung.
Cuando existe un hemotórax es indispensable drenar la sangre para así evitar complicaciones en el sistema respiratorio del paciente.
When there is a hemothorax, it is essential to drain the blood in order to avoid complications in the patient's respiratory system.
¿Cuáles son los signos y síntomas? / What are the signs and symptoms?
Los síntomas del hemotórax pueden ser variados, sin embargo entre ellos destaca el dolor torácico, presión arterial baja (hipotensión) palidez cutánea acompañado de frialdad y sudor, frecuencia respiratoria elevada y superficial, el paciente presenta disnea acompañado de ansiedad e inquietud.
The symptoms of hemothorax can be varied, however among them chest pain, low blood pressure (hypotension) pale skin accompanied by coldness and sweating, high and superficial respiratory frequency, the patient presents dyspnea accompanied by anxiety and restlessness.
Es indispensable realizar estudios de laboratorio, imágenes y médicos para llegar al diagnóstico adecuado de hemotórax.

¿Por qué ocurre? / Why happens?
La causa principal o más común suele ser por traumatismo, es decir un golpe en el pecho. Sin embargo existen diversas patologías las cuales pueden desencadenar en un hemotórax tales como la tuberculosis, un infarto pulmonar, el cáncer pulmonar o pleural.
The main or most common cause is usually trauma, that is, a blow to the chest. However, there are various pathologies which can trigger a hemothorax such as tuberculosis, a pulmonary infarction, lung or pleural cancer.
Otras causas pueden ser problemas en la coagulación sanguínea, cirugía torácica (siendo ésta una complicación), complicación por colocación de catéter venoso central (donde existe la ruptura de un vaso sanguíneo).
Other causes may be blood clotting problems, thoracic surgery (this being a complication), complication due to central venous catheter placement (where there is a rupture of a blood vessel).
Es indispensable que una persona que presenta hemotórax sea atendiendo en un centro de salud para así poder ser manejado de la mejor manera posible.
It is essential that a person with hemothorax be treated in a health center in order to be managed in the best possible way.
